Graham Greene's masterpiece—The Power and the Glory—follows an aging "whiskey priest" who lives in the Mexican state of Tobasco during the 1930s, which was a time that the Mexican government was banning and violently cracking down on the Catholic Church, ending in the Cristero War. The novel won the Hawthornden Prize Bristish literary award, and was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 greatest English language novels written since 1923.

Being the last priest in the state, the protagonist continues traveling the countryside, performing last rights and communion, and being pursued and threatened by the military, the police, and his fellow country folk—all while grappling with his own doubts about God, his past sins, and his responsibility being the last man of the cloth in a world determined to stamp out belief in the Divine.

The Power and the Glory is my favorite novel, and I am excited to be able to present to you this third printing of the January 1946 reissue (the novel's "true first" edition was released with the title The Labyrinthine Ways). Published by The Viking Press in 1949, the book is in excellent condition, with a tight binding and unmarked pages. The dust jacket is in great shape for its age with a few scuffs and  has been re-covered with a mylar protective jacket.

Fun Fact: If you want to see Graham Greene's original manuscript for the novel, you can view it at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

BE AWARE: Small Vintage items will add an additional $7.50 in shipping to any order. I know its kindof crummy. I really want to keep the price down on these items, but I also want them to get to you undamaged. Which costs a bit for packing materials and the shipment. Hopefully if you really wanna snag a deal, you live locally and can take advantage of our free in town pickup and delivery!
