T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom
T. E. Lawrence, better known by the name Lawrence of Arabia was born the illegitimate son of Thomas Chapman, an Anglo-Irish nobleman. He studied history at Jesus College at Oxford, before becoming a renowned archeologist for the British Museum.
At the onset of World War One, he joined the Army and was stationed at Cairo with the Arab Bureau. Lawrence believed that the key to victory for the British Empire in the Middle East was in the utilization of the tribes of Arabs and Bedouin living semi-autonomously on the edges of the Ottoman rule. He worked his way onto a ship bound for Jeddah—near Mecca—where he met the Sharif of Mecca, and joined the Sharif's son, Emir Feisal (future king of Syria and Iraq) in a revolt for the independence of the Arab people.
Lawrence was an early adopter and pioneer of guerilla tactics for use in modern warfare. He led bands of Arabs on camelback for hit-and-run raids of Turkish outposts, utilized dynamite and explosives to destroy rail lines, and famously crossed waterless deserts to attack and capture the Turkish port of Aqaba—believed to be impossible by the British—and proceeded to outpace the British Army to capture Damascus, helping to establish an Arab state.
T. E. Lawrence died in 1935, having crashed on his motorcycle in Dorset, England. Years after his death, his life would be used as a model and blueprint for the fictional hero Indiana Jones.
This is the Deluxe Edition from Garden City Publishing, which was published in 1936 following Lawrence's death.
